This session will explore changes in the epidemiologic landscape concurrent with the ascent of lifestyle medicine over the past two decades. The assessment of impacts will borrow from the Donabedian framework, considering structures, processes, and outcomes. Progress across these domains will be compared and contrasted to desired and intended impacts in the realms of both human and planetary health. The progress to date will be highlighted and celebrated; the many miles left to go before the full promise of lifestyle medicine is fulfilled will be conceded and chronicled. Great opportunities lie ahead - as, inevitably, do formidable challenges.
Learning Objectives:
Identify a set of landmark studies that prompted, and then issued from, the emergence of the field of lifestyle medicine.
Characterize epidemiologic trends in chronic disease, mortality, and longevity concomitant with the ascent of lifestyle medicine.
Enumerate challenges in the translation of lifestyle medicine principles into real-world effects at scale.
Review research tools and priorities to advance the case for lifestyle medicine.
Articulate the key outcome measures reflecting the impact of lifestyle medicine in the world.
