Practicing Lifestyle Medicine in Underserved Communities

For people with limited means and resources, lifestyle medicine can seem out of reach. Federally qualified health centers, which provide free and low-cost health care to underserved and primarily low-income patients, are well positioned to make lifestyle medicine more accessible. Health centers have a long history of increasing access to resources needed to achieve healthy lifestyles such as healthy food, safe housing, transportation, medicine, and more. During this session, participants will learn about a lifestyle medicine framework implemented and studied at a Texas health center that centers patients’ lived experiences and cultural practices. Discussion will include promising practices, community partnerships, policy efforts, leadership engagement, and the impact of lifestyle medicine on staff and patient wellness.
