Dr. Fiszman received his medical degree from State University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and undertook residency in internal medicine at the University of São Paulo. In 1997, he immigrated to the United States, where he received his PhD in biomedical informatics from the University of Utah. He was then a postdoctoral fellow at the National Library of Medicine (NLM) - National Institutes of Health (NIH), and then a scientist there until 2018. His research on artificial intelligence at these institutions has always focused on developing and applying robust natural language processing methods for both biomedical research and clinical text, with numerous publications in this area. More recently, he is focusing on applying natural language processing to lifestyle medicine applications such as real-time clinical decision support, literature-based discovery, and repurposing interventions (non-pharmacologic lifestyle interventions) for clinical diseases such as COVID-19 and Alzheimer’s Disease. In 2019, he returned to Brazil and is a professor of lifestyle medicine and biomedical Informatics at the Department of Medicine at Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is employed part-time at Semedy Inc (Newton, MA, USA) as principal biomedical informaticist. Dr Fiszman is also actively practicing internal medicine in Rio de Janeiro with an emphasis on lifestyle medicine and microbiome testing. In September 2023, he presented his research at the 1st International Congress on Plant-Based Nutrition held in São Paulo, Brazil. In November 2023, he presented his work at the VI Congress of the Brazilian College of Lifestyle Medicine.
Dr. Fiszman has been an elected fellow of The American College of Medical Informatics since 2011, and an active physician member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. He is certified in plant-based nutrition by Cornell and T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies, and board certified in lifestyle medicine by the International Board of Lifestyle Medicine.
