Senior Medical Director
UPMC Health Plan
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States
Dr. Suzanne Labriola, a Pittsburgh native, graduated from Duke University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. She attended Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine, earning her doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine. Suzanne then returned home to Pittsburgh to complete Internal Medicine Internship and Residency at UPMC Mercy. Dr. Labriola has practiced Internal Medicine and Palliative Medicine across the care continuum, from inpatient to outpatient offices, skilled nursing facilities, primary care to specialty multi-disciplinary clinics. Her Advance Care Planning and Physician Advisor roles led to her selection as Chief Medical Officer for two community hospitals in the Pittsburgh area where she oversaw Quality, Patient Safety, Regulatory as well as Medical Affairs. While part of these Senior Teams, she continued to champion network initiatives of suicide risk reduction, workplace violence reduction and IHI Age Friendly System recognition. When Dr. Labriola stepped away from hospital administration in 2021, she began her own medical consulting company, applying her community hospital experience with population health management to the Rural Healthcare Initiative. Additionally, as their Medical Director, she provided Regulatory and Patient Safety oversight to the Harris Computer Company’s seven national and international electronic health records and medical devices. In her current role, Dr. Labriola bridges medical policy and value-based payments to the bedside as she practices Integrative Medicine through MyHealth@Work, UPMC’s onsite and remote employee and dependents’ medical resource supporting Primary Care. She participates in benefit design, implementation and utilization management of UPMC Employee Group’s plan. For the past ten years, as a published author and invited speaker, Dr. Labriola has been advocating for earlier conversations to establish patient- centered goals of care in chronic condition management, partnering with national and state POLST Programs, as well as Duquesne University, to promote provider education on Preventative Ethics and Advance Care Planning. She continues in these efforts as Medical Director for UPMC Prescription for Wellness, linking physician orders to Insurance Services Division’s resources to address Social Determinants of Health.
